Dr. Dow. Is this common common that one eating disorder.
Then gets substituted with another eating disorder. It can absolutely it may seem kind of strange for somebody on the outside looking in to look at her story. And say that doesnt make any sense.
How could somebody who had anorexia then go to the other extreme and have binge eating disorder.
But actually theres a lot that they have in common dont they yeah. My mind was always the same its the mind right mm hmm yep brittany. Im just curious how did you find that balance um for me.
I had hit rock bottom physically. So. Many times and it took hitting rock bottom mentally.
And that was really the turning point for me is i had to hit rock bottom in my mind and. I had to go to the darkest place with darkest places within and heal was it was it facing death was it looking at your family was it one persons story in recovery. What was it that got you to rock bottom you know it was my family who never left my side and ultimately it had to just come from me there was no other story.
I was looking to but i always knew that my family they werent there for my eating disorder.
But they were there for me. And that meant a lot to me i want to applaud your family for that because seeing the pain and the anguish when you were being interviewed for this story susan. One of the things that i kept hearing from you is you thought your daughter was going to die.
Did you ever think that she would get to this point. Where here. She is on our stage.
Four years in recovery. Telling her story with strength and fortitude. Yeah.
I would spend every day.
Just hoping praying wishing dreaming that the next day. You would wake up and she would have that clarity in her mind that im okay. I dont need this anymore.
Im gonna go forward with my life and im better you know its sort of that you were hoping for a spontaneous miraculous moment. And it is a lot of faith and knowing that you have another day to work at something to help her to listen to her and hold her and tell her how much i loved her and then susan and lee. I know that also from the interview this must have been incredibly hard on you casey as well the whole family how did you stay together in terms of your marriage.
And then casey. How did this impact you as a younger sister well we love each other very much and i think thats critical and all of us susan and i we would do anything for our children. And we were extraordinarily motivated to do whatever it took to help her get better and did i ever believe that we would get to this day.
I always hoped so i know it feels like a miracle.
Somewhat and to see her up here so so beautiful and im so proud because its work she did the work and im grateful for it as a sister you look like youre holding back tears. The whole time. Its all very hard for me just seeing it all again just brings back a lot of memories.
And i guess as the younger sister you know everything she went through it kinda put me in a specific role in our family. So at a very young age i mean i think my mom said. I was like 10.
When i thought this up i put this pressure on myself to be this really good kid. And this really perfect kidcause. I didnt want to add extra stress to the family you know they were going through so much and it was kinda better to stay out of the way uh huh.
Oh yeah and highlighting those family roles the roles that we play in families is such a healing part these family systems that can actually contribute to eating disorders. Because it is a family disease right. .
